Data-driven silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing for future-ready sustainable industry
The project establishes a Sweden–India international exchange on data-driven silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing. The purpose is to develop a collaborative foundation for education, research, capacity building and future innovation activities aligned with industrial needs.
The activity builds on real-world experience from an ongoing SiC data-driven manufacturing pilot, which provides practical knowledge on how process data, energy use, sustainability metrics, traceability and manufacturing know-how can create value beyond the physical wafer or R&D thin films for emerging technologies. This experience will be used as a foundation for internationalisation, partner engagement, capacity building and future project pathways.
The project uses two complementary silicon carbide manufacturing cases. The PVT wafer manufacturing represents the industrial pathway, with relevance for power electronics, energy transmission, smart grids, electrification and sustainable energy infrastructure. The CS-PVT represents the education and research pathway, where a simplified and accessible SiC growth method can support emerging technologies, student training, research collaboration and future industrial capability.
A key positioning is by data that will drive the digital transition, which is necessary for industrial resilience and competitiveness, as well as actual use of innovations and technologies to meet the challenges in the society.
In silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing, Sweden has specialised knowledge in crystal growth, equipment and research-based innovation. However, the customer base for deployment and scale-up in Sweden and Europe is limited. This creates a clear need for internationalisation, strategic partnerships and demand-side engagement. India provides a strong opportunity through its semiconductor ambitions, industrial growth, large education base and the India–Sweden Strategic Partnership.
The Joint Statement regarding ‘Establishment of a Strategic Partnership’ on the India–Sweden Summit was released May 17, 2026. The partnership rests on four pillars:
- Strategic Dialogue for Stability and Security;
- Next-Generation Economic Partnership;
- Emerging Technologies and Trusted Connectivity
- Shaping Tomorrow Together – People, Planet and Resilience.
The Prime Ministers emphasised shared priorities on emerging technologies and trusted connectivity, as well as the critical role of digitalisation, and agreed to strengthen cooperation in this field.
The project is positioned within the India–Sweden Strategic Partnership and its Joint Action Plan 2026–2030. It contributes particularly to the pillars on Next-Generation Economic Partnership, Emerging Technologies and Trusted Connectivity, and People, Planet and Resilience. The project supports the direction of “Make in India” and “Made with Sweden” by connecting Swedish silicon carbide manufacturing knowledge, equipment experience and research-based innovation with India’s growing semiconductor, energy and industrial capability
The research and innovation facilities the growth of new business that can align with the development of a bilateral SME- and Start-up platform, in close coordination with private businesses. The emerging technologies offered by the CS-PVT create the next generation of energy technologies, especially in photonics and by active development in space relevant projects such as high-power laser transmission for satellites and drones.
The India-Sweden exchange in silicon carbide is a strategic area in renewable energy, energy transmission and smart grid technologies, sustainable industry and circular economy. The exchange includes also innovation ecosystems, and platforms such as Sweden-India platform which support bringing together companies and research institutions. The platform activity in training serves to attract strategic talent and actively promote people-to-people exchanges by the use of forums with interactive character. The increased bilateral talents in this project is especially focussed on students, PhD students, and researchers. That will facilitate development of real cooperation and promotes technology transfer, especially in cleantech and future industrial capability.
Through Sweden–India collaboration, the project will develop a joint agenda for data-driven SiC manufacturing, identify relevant education and research activities, engage strategic partners, and prepare future larger initiatives. The long-term aim is to strengthen competence, trusted innovation ecosystems and future-ready sustainable industry by linking semiconductor manufacturing, digitalisation, energy infrastructure and emerging technologies.
